One of the simplest, least expensive and most common service a vehicle will ever require is an oil change. But what is an oil change really all about? Beyond changing the oil and filter, what’s the big deal about where you go to have this service performed?
How we do an Oil Change
What is an oil change, as performed by the Steel Horse professionals? When you bring your vehicle in for an oil change, we start by taking a minute and checking that all of your exterior lights are working. We stock almost any bulb that your vehicle will require. We then check the operation of windshield wipers and the washers as well.
Once the vehicle is up in the air, we drain the oil, change the filter and inspect the steering and suspension systems, including components like springs, shocks, tie rods and ball joints. By lifting your vehicle on a hoist, instead of using a pit like the ones found at our competitors’ shops, we can find problems before they worsen and lead to tire wear or an unsafe vehicle.
While we’re under your vehicle, we also check other under-vehicle systems such as the exhaust, plumbing for the fuel and brake systems, and the underbody structure itself. What is an oil change without a thorough and safe inspection of your vehicle, right?
Before we lower your vehicle, we rotate the tires – if required – to extend the life of your tires. We also check tire tread and air pressure, adjusting as required. While the wheels are off, it gives us a chance to look at the brakes and the remaining suspension system, keeping an eye for worn or failing components.
Changing Oil the Right Way
Once back on the ground, your vehicle’s engine will get filled with oil – the correct oil. Newer vehicles can use not only synthetic oil, compared to conventional petroleum based oil, but many manufacturers specify certain grades or additives in the oil. We stock oils in every formulation and spec to make sure that we’re using the oil the manufacturers had intended. Using the wrong oil can cause damage to expensive engine components, or it may void a factory warranty.
Before we close the hood, we check the levels of all your fluids and top up any that may need it. We’ll check the condition as well, noting any fluids that may need to be changed. Belts and hoses get a once-over, and we also test your battery.
The few last details include oiling your door hinges and latches, and cleaning your windshield. Once the reminder sticker is filled out and put on your windshield, our job is finished.
All this in under an hour – while you wait in our convenient waiting area. Contact us to schedule an appointment, or visit our Oil Change page to learn more about what is an oil change.
